Chapter 7

Damnit, why couldn’t they get just a little more time? Rey's stomach knotted with gloom as he wrapped Saira in his arms, the scent of her all over him.

Another blow batted the hull and the boat rocked once more. He stumbled before steadying his balance.

"Makaras." Her brows knitted with worry. "I hope that's all there is out there."

"I know you can't shift." He held her gaze with intensity as he traced her cheek. His heart was full of her. "But the hags won't come in, I promise."

And he truly hoped he was right. With the makaras hitting the hull and the rolls of the sea around them, they would not be able to fight a sea hag set on freezing them on the spot if one managed to break through his wards.

The next whack to hit the boat knocked him back into the captain’s seat. Saira fell onto his lap with a yelp.

"We have to fend them off." Her determination was laden with alarm. "They'll break something."

He frowned, clinging to her waist as the Skyrunner continued to sway sharply. He wasn't sure how much the metal hull could take. A lot probably, but the beasts could easily damage the props or his brand-new sounder.

He pushed himself and Saira to their feet, his mind racing. He had no choice—he would have to do something to get rid of the beasts.

"Get down below. It's safer." His grip was firm on her shoulder. "I'll see if I can harpoon them away."

"I'm not made of glass, Rey." She pressed her lips together. "I can push them off, too. "

He stared at her long bare legs with a sigh of longing. A strong sense of responsibility for her wellbeing was lodged at his chest.

She had been his. And was still his now.

He suddenly found himself deeply possessive. No one else should ever have her.

He seized both her shoulders and attempted to plead with her. "You're barefoot."

"I’m tough." She was adamant, her expression fierce. She might not be able to turn into a panther now but the predator instincts were still very much a part of her.

His admiration for her soared. While one side of him wanted to shield her from harm, the other side was thrilled to see that, while being one of the most gorgeous women on the planet, she was also a true fighter.

"Come on, then," he grumbled, relenting despite his better sense. "Let's do this."

They scrambled below and onto the back deck before another thud tilted the boat.

"Dammit!" He gripped the railing and reached for his fishing spears and harpoons secured against the bulkhead. "They will break something."

The sea had grown angry. Thick white foams sheared from the waves crashing over the gunwale to slide and tumble across his deck. The sea spray turned the marine air thicker.

Dusk was setting just as it did the previous night when the first makara had appeared on his deck. But this time, the sigils prevented them from boarding. Still, their rotting kelp scent was pervasive and they seemed set on hitting the hull relentlessly.
